Moab - Biking (not Hiking) Mecca

We'd been planning on going to Moab the weekend of 10/25 for quite some time to do some mountain biking (Dave, not me...I was going to take Zeke and do some hiking). Side note: the first time I ever mountain biked was in the Exterra Sprint Triathlon at Keystone. I finally made it to the top after like two hours of walking my bike up the mountain. People are cheering, I'm excited to make my way down and get on flat land again so I hop on my bike and away I go. The first turn is a sharp right and before I get to the turn I can hear the people shouting "sit back, sit back"! Too late: crash, "shit", tumble, "damn", bam, "ouch". Ever since then, don't really like mountain biking.

Anywho, so really this is Dave's big trip. We were supposed to leave Friday after work. He calls me Friday mid-day to tell me he's sick and doesn't think he should go. At that point I really didn't want to go if he couldn't but we decided it would be best if I did. I've never been, I could avoid getting sick, and Dave could rest in peace and quiet at home. So away I (and Zeke) went. I met up with Ash, Matt, Amy and Scott and we caravanned to Moab, UT. Todd, Steve, Janet and Jeanna were already there. Saturday the group rode Slick Rock while I decided to tour Arches National Park. I get there and asked if dogs are allowed in the Park. Yes but they can't be on the trails. What the?? Well, I was already there and didn't know what else I could do so I decided I would drive through, take pictures and walk Zeke later. Arches is amazing! I unfortunately did not see "the" arch, you know the one...the one that is on the Utah license plates? Yeah, that one. The weather was perfect and it wasn't crowded at all...I highly recommend going in October.

After the Park I go into town, grab a sandwich and eat along a creek. Then Zeke and I went for a walk partly on a trail, partly through neighborhoods. If you can imagine an area drier and browner than Colorado, then you are imagining Utah. There are nasty bushes everywhere that produce these sharp, hurtful "goat’s heads". I remember Dave cursing them in the past because they give him flat tires. I was now cursing them (and Zeke would if he could talk) because Zeke kept stepping on them. Ouch!!! So needless to say, we didn't really get a good walk in.

Saturday night we went out to dinner and celebrated Ash's 32nd birthday. I know I've written a lot already and if you're still with me, thank you, but I have to talk about the drinking situation. After dinner, Ash is still wide awake which is unusual and I decide to take advantage. We pull into Eddie McStiff's and tell the hostess that we'd like to have some refreshments in the bar area. Well, we can't stand in the bar area unless we are able to touch the bar. Nor can we have refreshments without ordering food (but we can get chips and salsa for $.75). Then she tells us about the "Beer Den" where we can have beer (but no hard liquor or wine) without having to order food. Sign us up we say. The "Beer Den" is simply this cornered off area with a few tables.

Sunday Ash and I hiked Slick Rock and then me, Ash and Scott headed back to Denver. Overall it was a great weekend but next time I'll leave the dog at home. :)

Since Zeke doesn't have opposable thumbs, he couldn't get a picture of me.
